The History of The Palace

The Palace Danbury opened its doors on September 6, 1928. Designed by architect Thomas W. Lamb, the theater boasted 1,999 seats and featured a luxurious interior and classic Art Deco design. In its early years, The Palace became a prominent venue for silent films and vaudeville performances, playing a vital role in the cultural life of the area.

From the 1940s to the 1960s, The Palace earned a reputation as a premier venue for live entertainment, hosting jazz and big band performances, touring Broadway shows, and popular music acts. It also thrived as a beloved movie palace, where audiences gathered for everything from Hollywood epics to Saturday matinees. During the 1970s, as multiplex theaters transformed the moviegoing experience, the Palace adapted by becoming a triplex. After serving the community for many more years, it closed its doors in 1995.

Modern Legacy

In 2008, the theater underwent revitalization and reopened to the public as a more intimate 400-seat venue. This allowed it to preserve its historic charm while offering a modern, flexible space that meets the evolving needs of the community. Today, The Palace hosts a diverse range of events, including live music, comedy, theater, film screenings, and community gatherings, showcasing both local talent and national acts.

From its days as a grand movie palace to its modern role as a live performance venue, The Palace Danbury remains a cornerstone of Danbury’s cultural and entertainment scene. By preserving its rich history while adapting to contemporary needs, The Palace continues to serve as a welcoming space for both artists and the community.
